Final Grade Calculator
What do you need on the final to get the grade you want? Enter your current grade, the final exam's weight, and your target — see the exact score you need, plus what every possible final-exam score would do to your course grade.
How the final-exam math works
Your course grade is a weighted average: everything so far counts for (100% − final weight), and the final counts for its weight. To find the final score you need, the formula works backwards: needed = (desired − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight.
Two things students get wrong: first, a heavy final swings your grade fast — with a 40% final, every 10 points on the exam moves your course grade 4 full points. Second, the answer can exceed 100%, which means the target is mathematically out of reach and it's time to adjust expectations (or negotiate extra credit).
Strategies when the number looks scary
If you need 95%+ on the final, don't panic — get strategic. Ask the professor exactly which chapters the final emphasizes and weight your study time there. Past exams, if available, are the single best predictor of the real thing. And check the syllabus for grade replacement, dropped lowest scores, or extra credit — any of these changes the "current grade" input above and can move the target back into reach.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if the calculator says I need more than 100%?
Then the desired grade is mathematically impossible, even with a perfect final. The results show the highest course grade you can still reach — aim for that, or ask about extra credit.
Should I use my weighted or unweighted current grade?
Use whatever your school's portal shows as your current overall percentage — that already reflects the weighting of everything so far. The only weight you enter separately is the final exam's.
What does final exam weight mean?
The share of your course grade decided by the final alone, from your syllabus — commonly 20–40%. A 30% final means 30% of your grade is still up for grabs.
Can I use this for AP or college classes with +/- grades?
Yes — enter the percentage cutoffs. If an A− starts at 90%, use 90 as your desired grade; for a B+ at 87%, use 87.
Why does a small change in my current grade matter so much?
Because the final only covers part of the grade, each point you add now is "locked in" at full value, while points on the final are diluted by its weight. Raising your current grade 2 points with a 30% final is worth the same as 4.7 extra points on the exam.
