How Exact Age Is Calculated

Calendar age isn’t total-days ÷ 365 — leap years make that wrong. Instead, full years are counted by comparing month and day first, then the leftover months and days:

Years = full years elapsed on the month/day anniversary
then count whole months, then remaining days

Leap years are handled naturally because the calendar itself carries them: someone born March 1, 2020 turns 1 on March 1, 2021 (366 days later), not after 365 days. February 29 birthdays legally and conventionally celebrate on February 28 or March 1 in non-leap years — this calculator advances them to March 1.

Your Age Across the Solar System

A “year” is one orbit around the Sun, and every planet orbits at its own pace. Mercury zips around in just 88 Earth days, so you’d be over 150 Mercurian years old — while one Neptunian year takes nearly 165 Earth years, making you not even a quarter of a Neptunian year old yet. It’s a fun reminder that age is just a count of laps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t you just divide total days by 365 to get someone’s age?

Because leap years add extra days. Dividing by 365 ignores them and drifts off by about a day every 4 years. The correct method counts full calendar years on the month/day anniversary first, then leftover months and days.

How are leap years handled?

They’re handled naturally by the calendar: full years are measured anniversary-to-anniversary, so leap days inside the span are automatically included in the total-days count.

What if I was born on February 29?

In non-leap years the birthday is observed on February 28 or March 1 depending on convention; this calculator advances Feb 29 birthdays to March 1 for anniversary math.

Can I calculate someone’s age on a past date?

Yes — set “Age at date” to any date after the birthdate, such as a historical event, to see exactly how old someone was then.

What does ‘total days lived’ mean?

The exact number of 24-hour days between the birthdate and the as-of date, counting every leap day in between. Multiply by 24 for hours, or by 1,440 for minutes.
